Choosing Your Wedding Flowers
Your choice of flowers will be influenced by many things; the style and fabric of your dress, your theme and location, colour scheme, the time of year, favourite or significant flowers, budget, your carbon footprint amongst others so it is our pleasure to share these tips on choosing your wedding flowers and introduce you to some of our favourite wedding suppliers
What time of year are you getting married? Including flowers in their natural season will be more cost effective, and equally importantly, they will be at their peak quality. For example Peonies are available for several months of the year but are at their stunning best in June, and also most reasonably priced.
The style, colour and material of your dress will certainly influence your choice of flowers. Include some soft textures and delicate shapes if your dress is lace; featuring smooth textures and bold shapes will enhance a silk or satin gown. Brides often think white flowers will not go with an ivory dress but very few flowers are pure white. Rather like paint colours there are many ‘whites’ to choose from!
If you want to be eco-friendly ask your florist to use English or locally grown flowers. The choice and availability will vary greatly depending on the time of year and what the great British weather is doing on any given week! On the plus side, even in winter English flowers are available such as Narcissi and Hyacinths from Cornwall. Using seasonal flowers will always be a reminder in years to come of your special day. Be aware that the beautiful ‘English garden style roses’ that are widely available are actually grown thousands of miles away! However, many flowers grown abroad do not need heat and supplementary lighting during production which can be offset against air miles.
Remember your florist is a professional who will be happy to give you as much help as you need, and will advise you on any aspect of choosing the flowers for your special day.
