York Castle Museum holds its first Wedding
The first couple to marry at York Castle Museum have made history surrounded by history.
Craig Whitehead and Rachel Surtees have taken to the world famous Victorian cobbled street at York Castle Museum to become the first couple to marry at the museum and the first couple in Yorkshire to marry under new evening wedding licencing laws.
Jennifer Chadwick, Wedding and Events manager, said: A wedding at York Castle Museum was always going to be special but to be the first at the museum and the first evening ceremony in the whole of Yorkshire has made Craig and Rachel’s special day even more so.

The Bridegroom, Craig, who visited the museum as a child, said: As soon as I met Rachel and after the nerves had died down it felt like I could tell her anything and was completely taken by her, I believe she felt the same way too. We went on a few dates and I realised there was something different about her.
We soon got together and hard times hit. She stood by me like a rock and this really tested us but whatever life threw at us we stuck together, and one night having a drive round we stopped off at a fast food restaurant and over a double cheeseburger I asked my best friend to marry me and, as they say, the rest is history and now we endeavour on our new journey together.
The romantic Victorian cobbled street of Kirkgate offers a spectacular setting for those looking for a vintage style or unusual ceremony that is surrounded by history.
The new licensing law means that the museum is the first venue in the county to offer couples the chance to tie the knot in the evening.
All profit from weddings taking place at both venues is used to look after the collections, buildings and gardens run by York Museums Trust York Art Gallery, York Castle Museum, York St Mary’s and the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens.
