Finding the Right Live Band
Having a live band perform at your wedding can be great. What you probably don’t think about when you’re getting excited and are looking forward to having one perform at your wedding is that it can be an unmitigated disaster, too.
But we’re not here to focus on the negative.
Instead, follow these tips that will help you find the right band for your wedding.
1.How to Find a Band
You have a handful of options when it comes to finding a band:
- You and/or your partner sees a band performing at another wedding or in a pub and decide that you like them
- You seek recommendations from friends and family members, either directly or through your social media presence
- You use a search engine
There is no right or wrong way, and it really depends what you’re looking for. Using a search engine will give you exposure to the biggest number of possibilities, including music directories and websites that can put you in touch with wedding bands, though seeing a band you like or getting a personal recommendation may help you make a decision quicker.
There’s nothing to stop you trying all three options!

2.Try and See Them Live
If you do receive a recommendation for a wedding band or look online, try and see the band live before you book them. If you can’t, then almost all bands will at the very least have some YouTube videos of themselves online, while many will have a website that has further information and maybe even sound clips of their performances both live and in studio.
3.Choose a Band to Fit What You Want
Sounds like an obvious tip, right? We agree, yet it is incredible how many people will choose a wedding theme, decide to book a band, and then get frustrated when the two don’t match!
If you’re having a vintage themed wedding, choose a band that fits the bill. Likewise, if you’re asking guests to wear black tie, the musical entertainment needs to fit perfectly.
Choosing a band to fit what you want doesn’t just mean thinking of your wedding theme. Do you want them to play specific songs? Does the band have a set list you can choose songs from? Do you actually need a specific genre of band or would a stylish tribute act work better for you?
4.Avoiding Problems with the Venue
While many couples choose to book a wedding band at the last minute, you can find yourself having venue issues if you’re not careful. Some venues have certain criteria for allowing bands to perform there, while others may even insist you use the house band or choose from their own recommendations.
Most of the time you won’t have any problems at all on this front, but it’s definitely worth taking the time to be sure.
In the same way, when you’re booking a band, make sure they know where the wedding is and provide them with any further information they may need to know or that will help them.
