Should you have breakfast?
With all the stress that comes with planning your perfect wedding, are you forgetting to eat the most important meal of the day? Yes, we are talking about breakfast. You might ask yourself if breakfast is really all that important. We realise that planning the perfect wedding takes time which you can hardly afford on top of your busy schedule. However, it is vital not to allow your wedding plans to let down your health. This is a particularly important for those brides-to-be who feel skipping breakfast is a good way to lose weight. Breakfast can contribute significantly to your daily calorie intake so skipping it would technically ‘save’ calories. This may seem like a good idea on the surface but the reality is far from it!
Research has shown that people who eat breakfast have more balanced diets than those who skip it, they are less likely to be overweight, will lose weight more successfully and have reduced risk of diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Do you get up and think, ‘I just don’t have the time, I’m running late I’ll just skip breakfast this morning.’ This seemingly harmless move is actually a serious weight loss mistake! What will happen at around 10:30am or 11am when you haven’t eaten since the night before? Yes, you will get hungry! At this point, do you reach for the healthy apple or the carrot sticks in the fridge? No, they won’t do the trick. Instead you dive head first into a bag of crisps or a bar of chocolate that are far more satisfying. Even if you manage to resist this temptation you are more likely to eat in excess at lunchtime as your body will feel starved.
To make matters worse, did you know that skipping breakfast can make you grumpy? Studies show that people who eat breakfast tend to be in better moods.
Many diet advisors recommend eating protein for breakfast, but remember this doesn’t have to be meat or fish many dairy products have a good amount of protein too and skimmed and semi-skimmed milk actually have more protein than full fat milk! They also provide you with many vitamins and minerals that can be harder to find in other meals throughout the day. For example, if you have milk with your breakfast you can get as much as 35% of your recommended allowance of calcium for the day. This is more than you can get from an equivalent portion of cottage cheese or yoghurt.
It’s not just the food that is important. You need to make sure that you get plenty of fluids with your breakfast. While your body has been working hard overnight it uses up a great deal of fluids so you are likely to wake up dehydrated. Dehydration leads to your metabolism slowing down to conserve fluids so this is another good reason for milk with breakfast.
However, don’t worry if you are unable to find time to cook. Just remember to stick to correct portion-sizes and make healthy choices, even in ready-made breakfast. For example, a bowl of wholegrain cereal such as bran or whole wheat will give you the perfect, healthy start to your day.
