Wedding Party Roles and Responsibilities
Everything You Need To Know
To say wedding planning is stressful would be quite the understatement. There are countless moving parts that must cohesively fit together for the special day to go perfectly. Fortunately, you don’t have to handle everything yourself. Your wedding party full of close friends and family will all have specific roles and responsibilities to ensure the day goes smoothly. Keeping track of each wedding party member’s duties can get confusing, so read below to learn more!
Best Man and Maid of Honor
The best man and maid of honor play very important roles in assisting the groom and bride (respectively) throughout the entire wedding process. They are usually someone very close to the bride or groom, such as a childhood best friend or a sibling around the same age. Picking the best man and maid of honor can be difficult for those getting married, as there is the potential for bruised egos and resentment from those not chosen.
Before the wedding, the best man usually coordinates matching outfits for the groom and groomsmen. Sometimes, they might even help the groom pick out the perfect wedding ring for their beau. Other responsibilities could potentially include planning the bachelor party, which can require extensive coordination depending on the activity. On the wedding day, the best man will keep the wedding rings safe and help the groom and groomsmen prepare for the ceremony.
Similarly, the maid of honor helps select the wedding dresses for the bride and bridesmaids. They also plan a bachelorette party, bridal gift, and bridal shower. Many opt to reduce the logistical stress and plan a combined bachelor and bachelorette party. This allows the wedding party members to mingle and get to know each other before the big day, which can lead to an even better wedding!
As you can see, the best man and maid of honor share many overlapping responsibilities. It’s customary that they each give a toast and a speech during the reception where they explain their connection to the bride and groom while wishing them well on their journey of marriage. They are also witnesses for the couple’s marriage license. Throughout the entire process, the best man and maid of honor must provide moral support as well. They were chosen for their lifelong bond with the bride or groom, and they’re needed now more than ever.

Groomsmen and Bridesmaids
Groomsmen and bridesmaids are an important part of any wedding, and they are typically close friends or family members of the bride and groom. They are dressed to the nines, usually in matching tuxedos and dresses picked out by the best man and maid of honor. Before the ceremony, groomsmen are responsible for attending the bachelor party while bridesmaids must attend the bachelorette party, if feasible. They can also help plan the events if needed, such as the bridal shower.
Similar to the best man and maid of honor, groomsmen and bridesmaids must provide emotional support throughout the entire process. They also may be needed for various spontaneous tasks throughout the wedding day. Many wedding parties also have junior groomsmen and bridesmaids to include younger relatives and attendees, but this is not required.

Ushers
When guests arrive at the wedding ceremony, they will be greeted by ushers. Their job includes putting on a smile, greeting guests, handing out programs, and showing people to their seats. The number of ushers depends on the size of the wedding, but a general rule of thumb is one usher per 50 guests. A smaller ceremony may not require ushers, but they are still a great way to create more roles for friends and family that are not in the wedding party. The ushers will definitely appreciate being assigned a task for the special day, especially since they were not included as a bridesmaid or groomsmen.
Readers
Similar to ushers, readers are a great way to include more people in the wedding. During the ceremony, readers will recite a brief passage. Typical readings during weddings include religious scripture and personal poems or essays. However, sometimes the venues or participants may have restrictions on what can and cannot be read, so be sure to check with the organizers of the wedding and/or bride and groom before choosing your reading.
Ring Bearer & Flower Girl
Similar to junior groomsmen and bridesmaids, the ring bearer and flower girl roles are excellent ways to involve children in the ceremony. They will be dressed to match the other wedding party members and march down the aisle tossing flower petals as they go. At the end of their march, the ring bearer will present those beautiful wedding bands to the soon to be married couple. Of course, a ring bearer and flower girl are not required, but they are often a crowd favorite and another great way to involve more people in the wedding party, especially the children of those close to the bride and groom.
Parents of the Bride and Groom
The parents of the bride and groom play a very important role in the wedding party, as they end up helping plan and finance most of the events. The parents of the bride typically pay for the wedding and reception while hosting and overseeing the events. In some cases, the bride’s parents send out an engagement notice to local newspapers. The father also escorts the bride down the aisle to give her away at the altar.
Conversely, the parents of the groom pay for, host, and oversee the rehearsal dinner. They also pay for the honeymoon. Most importantly, the parents are there for emotional and moral support, as watching their child get married is one of the biggest days of their lives.
Wedding Efficient
One role that is often overlooked until the day of the wedding is the efficient. The efficient could be a pastor, or anyone else with a minister’s license, and is in charge of more than just leading the legal aspects. Before the day of, many pastors like to meet with the couple beforehand to set expectations and make sure things will run smoothly. The day of, the efficient is critical to ensuring the wedding starts on time along with the proceeding events. The efficient will perform the actual ceremony, which will be customized for each couple. They will also be responsible for filling and signing all the necessary paperwork.
Untitled Guests
For all other guests not mentioned above, don’t feel left out. You are still a part of the most important day of the bride and groom’s lives, and you’re there to have fun!
