Coming in as the second most popular UK destination for a proposal to take place is Cornwall, with its quaint fishing villages and idyllic beaches around every corner. This was closely followed by The Highlands in Scotland, with its beautiful, dramatic landscape.

When it comes to proposals, the Lake District has been voted as the top UK destination couples would most like to get engaged, according to new research1 by holiday home provider, Sykes Holiday Cottages.
The Lake District has endless picturesque spots to get down on one knee, and breath-taking back drops for the all-important ‘ring selfie’ photo. Coming in as the second most popular UK destination for a proposal to take place is Cornwall, with its quaint fishing villages and idyllic beaches, this was closely followed by The Highlands in Scotland, with its beautiful, dramatic landscape.
The top ten places for engagements to take place in the UK, according to the research are:

- Cornwall
- The Highlands
- Yorkshire
- The Cotswolds
- Devon
- Peak District
- North East
- Lancashire
- South Ireland

If you’re looking to plan the perfect proposal, it might also be worth noting that the holiday extra most likely to impress your other half is an open fire or log burner, with 66% of adults voting it as the most romantic extra touch on a UK getaway. Other holiday extras most likely to make your partner feel special are hot tubs (48%), a four poster bed (48%) and champagne (45%).
It wasn’t all extravagant additions either; a bunch of flowers (33%) and chocolates on the pillow (35%) were also rated highly on the list to win someone’s heart during a UK break.
The research looked at peoples’ preferences when it comes to different types of proposals and found that popping the question in the countryside (21%) was most favoured by couples, followed by a secluded spot (15%) and a beach proposal (13%). Only one in ten (10%) respondents said that they’d like to be asked in a luxury restaurant, showing that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a ‘yes’ from your partner, and a more intimate proposal may actually be the best idea.
Sykes Holiday Cottages also discovered which National Parks in the UK people find the most romantic, with the Lake District (31%) coming out on top again, followed by Lock Lomond and The Trossachs (9%) and the Yorkshire Dales (9%).
