I’m often asked about primer when applying make-up to my clients. What is it, what does it do, should I use one, will it help my make-up to stay on all day?

Primer can be used under foundation, eyeshadow and lipstick. Think of it as priming a wall prior to painting. You are priming the skin ready for make-up application! Primer eases the application of the product and helps to keep the make-up in place for long lasting results.

There are different types of primer available. For prepping the skin prior to foundation application, there are primers designed for enhancing radiance, minimising pores, as well as mattifying and hydrating primers. From budget to higher end, there is something out there to suit everyone. Face primer should be applied after moisturising and left to sink in for a few minutes before beginning the foundation application.

Eye primers aid in keeping eyeshadow in place, as well as preventing creasing, with lip primers helping to prevent your lips from bleeding, as well as prolonging your lipstick wear.

This is just a brief introduction to the use of make-up primer. Of course it is not essential to use one, but the use of it does help to create long lasting make-up.  There are lots of different brands available with different uses so have fun experimenting!
