Behind the Scenes of Stunning Wedding Invitations
What inspired you to create Vanessa Williams’ wedding invitation design?
As with all of the couples who Adorn Wedding Invitations works with; when Vanessa Williams and Jim Skrip first contacted Adorn to enquire about us making their wedding invitations, we started off by really getting to know the couple as best we could. As exciting as it was, we tried not to think of Vanessa and Jim as a celebrity couple, instead we approached the two as if they were any other couple about to celebrate the start of their new lives together. We learnt of the hurdles that the two had faced to finally find each other, with Vanessa being previously married multiples times. We also learnt of how true love can really be found anywhere in the world, after the couple initially met in Egypt. All of this personal information, along with other shared wedding details that Vanessa and her wedding planner Carla Measer-Costamagna had in the works, sparked immediate design ideas in the Adorn team’s minds. As much as Adorn’s designers had going through their minds, they also wanted to ensure that Vanessa and Jim shared the same vision; therefore we asked the couple to create an inspiration board on Pinterest filled with absolutely any colours, patterns, textures etc. that the two found most aesthetically pleasing.
Was it hard to choose a final design?
Instead of allocating just one designer to this project, all of the Adorn Wedding Invitations team collaborated to create the most extravagant invitation design to be produced by Adorn to date. The designers had all of Vanessa and Jim’s Pinterest inspiration plastered around the office walls to constantly remind them of different elements to incorporate. The team put away their computer mouses and picked up their pencils to sketch out all of their ideas, and combine the top details from each other’s work, until the team came to a final decision of their favourite design. Before anyone could get their hopes up though, this design was sent to the couple for their honest opinion. The Adorn team anticipated the couple wanting to make changes to their chosen design, however to their delight Vanessa and Jim instantly fell in love with their unique artwork and encouraged Adorn to go ahead with the printing and production of this magnificent suite.
What printing and production techniques did you use, and why did you choose to use them?
As showcased in our finished product, multiple different techniques were utilised to produce such a unique and extravagant invitation and stationary suite for Vanessa and Jim. To start with we used a laser cut process, which required the use of high-powered laser beams to cut the gold outer card, based on the intricate pattern that our designs had sketched and transferred onto a computer program to further refine. The main reason that laser cutting technology is always a top choice for our designers is because it results in a high-quality and impressive finish, regardless of how delicate the design may be. To produce the elegant gold foil wording evident on all of the couple’s cards, we created a metal plate with all of their wording and information pressed into one side. We then positioned a gold foil film between the metal plate and the invitation card, the plate is then used to press the foil onto the card and heat is applied to melt the foil into the indented artwork that the plate had therefore created. Gold or silver foiling is always our number one recommendation for any couple who is looking to really impress their guests, and truly set the tone for an event worthy of royalty which in the case of Vanessa Williams’ marriage to Jim Skip was definitely true!
