Your Crowning Moment: The Ultimate Guide to a Bridal Hair Trial
Among the many decisions a bride makes in preparation for her wedding day: dress, shoes, flowers, cake etc. your hairstyle might seem like a smaller detail. But your hair plays a vital role in completing your bridal look. It frames your face, anchors your veil, and enhances your overall style. That’s why a bridal hair trial isn’t just a luxury, it’s essential for wedding day perfection.
A hair-trial appointment gives you the chance to test a style, work with your stylist, and ensure your vision comes to life. Like any rehearsal, your results will depend on your preparation. To help you make the most of this experience, here are my expert tips and practical advice, including how to prepare your hair, what to bring, and how to really get the most from your appointment.

-
Prep Your Hair the Right Way
Let’s start with the basics: your hair needs to be in the right condition for your stylist to work their magic. Most hairstylists agree that the best base for styling is hair that’s been washed the night before by shampooing twice and using only a little bit of conditioner on the ends. The only time you should wash your hair on the morning of the trial, is if you have very oily hair. Once washed, allow it to air dry or dry it with a hairdryer, but make sure that your hair is thoroughly dry for when you arrive to the appointment.
Avoid deep-conditioning treatments or leave-in products for the appointment unless you have very curly hair. These can weigh your hair down and make it difficult to achieve volume or curls that last. If you regularly use straighteners, try to avoid them for the appointment as it gives your stylist an opportunity to see what your hair is like in it’s natural state.

Inspiration is Essential – but be Realistic
Pinterest is full of stunning bridal hairstyles-many of those looks are enhanced with hair extensions or filters. When selecting inspiration photos, keep your own hair length, density, colour, and texture in mind. Choose images that feel achievable and suit your natural look.
I find mood boards are really helpful; a few carefully selected images that reflect your hair goals. Start by selecting styles that align with your hair type and length as well as highlighting the vibe of the style you would like to try e.g. boho or elegant.
If you’re not sure what would suit you, don’t worry. A thorough consultation with your stylist will help you both decide on what would work best for you on the day. In some cases you may need to try different styles, in which case you may need to book a second appointment.

-
Be Bold- Consider Hair Extensions
Hair extensions can be a game changer for your bridal hairstyle, especially if you’re dreaming of long waves or a voluminous up do. Many celebrity bridal styles rely on them, and with good reason. Using Clip-In extensions means you don’t have to wear them all the time but give you the results you’re looking for on the day.
Here’s why brides and stylists love them:
- Added Volume and Fullness: The more hair you have, the more your stylist has to work with to create your dream look.
- Increased Length: If you’ve been growing your hair, but it still isn’t quite the length you want, extensions can fill in the gaps.
- Support for Complex Styles: Certain buns, Hollywood waves, and half up dos, need to have more hair to make them look proportioned and polished.
- Longevity: Good quality human hair extensions will always help keep your style looking good for longer, even in unpredictable weather.
If you have extensions, please bring them along so that we can work out how best to use them. If you’re interested in getting them, as part of my bridal hair trial consultation I can do a colour match for you and have them ordered in time for your wedding day (you can reuse them for many more occasions in the future too, so they make a good investment).
-
Dress for Success
What you wear to your trial can influence how you perceive your hairstyle. Choose a white or ivory top, ideally with a neckline similar to your gown, this helps you visualise the finished look.
While you don’t need a full face of bridal makeup, a touch of natural glam will give you a better sense of how your overall look will come together.
-
Bring Your Bridal-Look Elements
If you’ve already chosen accessories like earrings, necklaces, hair jewellery, or your veil, bring these to your trial. Even if you’re unsure about using them, trying everything together during the trial will help you see the full picture. If you haven’t decided on accessories yet, this is the perfect time to experiment.
I stock a variety of hair accessories, which are available to try, from tiaras to combs and pins, and these are available to order should you wish.
-
Timing Is Everything
Plan to book your hair trial 6 to 8 weeks before your wedding day. This allows time to make adjustments and plan any necessary hair treatments such as trimming split ends or toning colour. If you have a hair colouring appointment, try and schedule that before the trial so you can see the full effect with the style, this also helps with the colour match should you want extensions.
-
Be Honest, but Stay Open-Minded
Your bridal hair trial is a collaboration between you and your stylist. If something doesn’t feel right – if a braid pulls too tight or a curl feels too formal – say so. My aim is to tailor the look to you. This is your chance to refine details, try variations, and explore options.
On the other hand, listen to your stylist’s input, especially when it comes to technical suggestions. I might recommend tweaking your inspiration to better suit your face shape, hair density, or weather conditions. If your dream boho-braid needs extensions to work properly, trust the guidance. My experience is part of what makes your trial so valuable.

-
Look Back
After the style is complete, take photos as this gives you a realistic view of how your hair will look on the day. Provide your stylist with feedback after you’ve worn the style for the day so if there are changes to be made, that you can discuss these ahead of your wedding or book in for another appointment.
Based on the results of the trial, I will work out a schedule for you to help manage expectations on timings for you and your bridal party and suppliers.
Final Words: Confidence is Key
Your bridal hair trial is about more than just aesthetics – it’s about confidence. When you know your hairstyle is exactly what you envisioned, you’ll step into your wedding day with calm, poise, and grace. Come prepared, be honest, and trust the process. With the right stylist and a little preparation and with added accessories or extensions, your hair will be just one more reason you feel unforgettable on your wedding day.
