Behind the Scenes – wedding make-up and the camera
Looking and feeling gorgeous on your wedding day is something every bride dreams of! There are so many factors to consider when it comes to choosing the hair and make-up for any occasion, but even more so on your wedding day. It’s a day where the bride and her bridal party are going to be ‘celebrities’, on show all day whilst celebrating your special moments. Not only do your hair and make-up need to last all day but they also need to reflect your beauty and personality. Today’s focus is on the relationship between wedding make-up and the camera. The make-up artist and the make-up products used are pivotal in ensuring those perfect photographs. After all, it is something that will be there for you to see in every picture that is taken.

Much of this comes with experience and interestingly not all make-up is suitable for the camera. There are so many different types of make-up and skincare available today that it is easy to become overwhelmed and confused. However, I have a few tips up my sleeve that will help you understand some of the factors we need to take into account for you on your wedding day.
The first and probably most important point is light, in particular natural light! Wherever the best natural light is, is usually where you will find most make-up artists working. This is because it’s the best way to see all the colours and textures properly. You will always find me in front of the biggest window or doorway, away from direct sunlight or shadows. Most photographers appreciate this light too.

The second most important factor is your skin. A well prepared skin is fundamental in creating a flawless complexion. Unfortunately this can’t always be achieved by applying skincare products on the day. The key is to work with a skincare professional and to start using good quality skincare products as soon as possible. This will treat and feed your skin ready for the application of make-up on the day. I always include a skincare consultation at the time of the trial with my brides and provide advice on how to best prepare the skin before the wedding. This goes hand in hand with facial treatments. Your chosen therapist will advise on a course of treatments in the run up to the wedding to help achieve the best results. A well prepared skin helps to keep make-up in place better. This is so important on your wedding day to make sure you don’t feel the need to touch up the make-up too often.

On to the make-up. For most of the brides I work with, natural make-up is what they choose. It’s important to remember, that natural looking make-up looks different to the human eye, than it does on camera. This is where you will need to trust your make-up artist, to create the right balance for you. You need to feel comfortable with the boldness of the make-up and how it’s going to show up on the camera. A make-up trial, or trials, in the run up to your day really helps with this. Part of my check list on the day of your wedding is to work with your photographer to see how the make-up looks on the camera. This is because each camera picks up the colours and shades differently. It is so important that a make-up artist and photographer work together to achieve this balance for you.
As you can see, there is a lot to consider when it comes to your wedding or special occasion make-up. I pride myself on creating an enjoyable and memorable experience for you. Finding ways to make sure you look and feel amazing on the day, and in your photo’s, is my passion so you relax and enjoy your amazing day!
